One of the most frequently asked questions heard from perfume lovers is “How should I store my perfumes?”.
At Lami Fragrance, we are pleased to provide answers to this pressing question, in order to ensure you get the best out of your precious prized perfumes.
Believe it or not, perfumes can go bad, if not stored properly. The oils and alcohol in perfume solution break down when exposed to air, heat, humidity and light, causing the perfume to lose its original color and scent. So, if you notice a discoloration in your fragrance and an unpleasant odor, it simply mean something has gone awry with your precious scented molecules.
However, you can retain and maintain the quality of your perfumes for as long as possible, by simply storing them properly. Here are some dos and don’ts to be carefully considered for storing your favorite fragrances.
TIP 1: STORE IN A DARK PLACE
Remember that exposure to light (sunlight) will cause your perfume to degenerate. So choose a dark place like a drawer or cabinet. You can as well put them in your wardrobe behind your clothes.
No matter how attractive the bottles of your perfumes might be, do not be tempted to display them atop a dresser, across a windowsill or on an open shelf.
TIP 2: STORE IN A COOL DRY PLACE
Some people keep their perfumes in bathroom shelves or counter, for a quick spritz after the showers. This is a no-no for perfumes. The fluctuations in temperature, coupled with steam from a hot bath and the humidity that comes from every shower in the bathroom, will do your perfume no good.
Likewise, do not store your perfume in other places of extreme temperature, like the freezer or in other places of extreme changes in temperature, like your car.
TIP 3: DO NOT LEAVE OPEN FOR TOO LONG
Exposing your perfume to air cause it to oxidize and produce off-odor. So when applying perfume, replace the cap as soon as possible.
Most perfumes come in an air-tight bottle. Let it remain so. Do not be tempted to transfer to another decanter, as transferring will expose it to air and cause it to degrade.
Your perfume bottle should be kept upright in its original package (box).
TIP 5: HANDLE WITH CARE
Perfume is not an oral suspension or syrup that you have to shake well before use. Shaking the perfume solution will spoil it faster. So, do not shake it.
Some perfumes do not come in spray bottles but in roll-on applicator. With daily use, dirt can get into the perfume solution, so ensure to clean the applicator after every use.
This being said, if you follow these simple tips, you will likely enjoy your fragrance for many years to come.
